History of Colomers
The origins of Colomers date back to the Middle Ages, when small rural settlements were established on the fertile plains of the Baix Empordà, near the Ter River. Its name may derive from agricultural uses or dovecotes. During this time, the village developed around the church and scattered farmhouses mainly devoted to agriculture.
Over the centuries, life in Colomers has been closely linked to the Ter River, which provided water for crops and fertile land, although it also posed flood risks. The local economy was traditionally based on both dry and irrigated farming.
During the modern period, the village maintained a stable rural structure with few urban changes. In the 19th and 20th centuries, improved infrastructure increased connectivity with nearby towns, while preserving its peaceful character.
Today, Colomers retains its rural essence and is valued for its natural surroundings and quality of life.
