The Iberian settlement of Ullastret is the largest Iberian archaeological site in Catalonia and one of the most important on the Iberian Peninsula. Located in the Baix Empordà region, this settlement dates from between the 6th and 2nd centuries BC and provides insight into how the ancient Iberians lived before the arrival of Rome.
The archaeological site preserves imposing walls, defensive towers, cobbled streets, and the remains of dwellings that demonstrate an advanced urban layout for its time. Its elevated location also offers a commanding view of much of the Empordà landscape, which explains its strategic value in antiquity.
Today, the site is part of the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya and has a museum space that helps to contextualize the visit with original pieces, reconstructions and explanations about Iberian culture.
An essential place to understand the historical roots of the territory and add cultural depth to any tour of the Empordà.
